About & History

What is Panch Kedar Yatra?

Panch Kedar Yatra is an extraordinary pilgrimage that takes devotees on a transformative journey to five holy temples of Lord Shiva in the majestic Uttarakhand Himalayas. This sacred circuit tour encompasses Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar.

It holds immense spiritual significance and dates back to ancient times when the Pandavas established these revered abodes in the Garhwal region. Embarking on the Panch Kedar Yatra is not merely a trek but an opportunity to seek divine blessings while being immersed in the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayan landscape.

History & The Mahabharata Connection

In the war of the Mahabharat, the Pandavas had to slay their evil cousins, the Kauravas, as well as their relatives and Brahmin Gurus. After the war, they wished to atone for the sins of committing fratricide and killing Brahmins. Lord Krishna advised them that they could only seek atonement with the blessings of Lord Shiva.

However, Shiva was exceedingly angry with the Pandavas for their deeds and did not want to grant them his "Divine Darshan." On their quest, the Pandavas wandered the Himalayas and finally reached Kedarnath, where Lord Shiva had disguised himself as a bull and mingled with a herd.

When Bheem tried to catch the bull, it began vanishing into the ground, later emerging in five parts at five different places in the Himalayas: the hump appeared in Kedarnath, the navel in Madhyamaheshwar, the chest and arms in Tungnath, the face in Rudranath, and the matted hair in Kalpeshwar.

The Pandavas constructed five temples at each of these places to appease Lord Shiva. Immensely pleased with their devotion, Shiva blessed them. Whoever completes this sacred journey rids themselves of their sins and attains salvation.
